Stroman Consulting Group provides services to clients based on Mike’s more than 35 years in the insurance industry, serving in a variety of capacities. The following is an overview of Mike’s professional background, and some of his accomplishments.
Mike began his professional career upon completing degree requirements from Rice University in January 1980 as an underwriter trainee in the Travelers Insurance Company Houston office and remained with Travelers through a move to re-open their San Antonio office later that year.
He moved to Bayly, Martin & Faye/San Antonio in 1981, as Account Executive in charge of a program of Police Professional Liability and Municipal General Liability, going from a new producer in July 1981 to $600,000 per month by December of that same year. That program later became Titan Insurance Company and was sold to USF&G in the mid-1990’s.
Mike returned to Houston in 1982, joining American General Fire & Casualty as Marketing Rep. After 11 straight months as highest ranking Marketing Rep (based on new business production through assigned agents) was promoted to Assistant to the President of American General Fire & Casualty.
Mike left American General in September 1983 to join John R. Ray & Sons, Inc., a well respected local agency in Houston, moving from Producer to Shareholder and making six acquisitions along the way.
Departing John R. Ray & Sons, Inc. in 1992 Mike joined Financial Guardian as Senior Vice President, was promoted to Executive Vice President in 1993 and oversaw growth from 29 to 108 employees, making one acquisition and creating six start-up entities during his time with Financial Guardian.
In 1996, Mike started Millennium Insurance Agency, Inc. from scratch, and grew the entity to $1,300,000 in revenue, then sold to Dean & Draper Insurance Agency, LP in 2004.
In May 2006, Mike formed Stroman Consulting Group to work with insurance entities on a variety of issues. Mike joined a client (Talon Insurance Agency, LP) as Sales Manager in November 2006 in an extended consulting relationship, and re-started Stroman Consulting Group in April 2008, focusing on Sales Management, Producer Acquisition, and M&A activities for agents and brokers.
Personal
Mike graduated from Rice University with a BA in Managerial studies in 1979 and has been involved in the Independent Insurance Agents of Houston as President, Director, Chairman of Executive Committee, Chairman of Impact and many other committee chairmanships and assignments. Mike has also been involved with the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas as committee member of many committees, and Regional Vice President of Impact, as well as serving as Chairman of Membership for South Texas for the Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers.
Community involvement includes past President of SCCEE Homeowners Association, Director of SCA and served in 2015 as Chairman of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Board of Stewards of St Luke’s United Methodist Church in Houston, where he teaches in Student Ministries and leads small group studies.
Mike has been married to Bonnie since 1980, and they have one granddaughter, one daughter in law and one son in law and three children, Lauren (32) Ben (28) and Allie (23).
